An IFBB Pro bodybuilder named Stanimal De Longeaux recently spoke about the circumstances surrounding the death of Shawn Rhoden, revealing some information that has not been widely reported. The news of Shawn Rhoden’s untimely death from a heart attack on November 6th, 2021, stunned the bodybuilding community.
A consistent top contender in the Open Pro division, Rhoden finally broke Phil Heath’s record of seven consecutive Mr. Olympia victories by taking home the title in 2018. Rhoden spent the last few years of his life trying to clear his name in a high-profile case. His impact on the sport, though, cannot be denied.
One of Shawn Rhoden’s closest friends and training partners, Stan De Longeaux has access to information that was previously unknown outside of Rhoden’s inner group. Stan discussed Shawn Rhoden’s current health issues and the events leading up to his untimely death during his recent appearance on The Menace Podcast on the Muscle And Fitness YouTube channel.

According to Stanislas De Longeau in The Past, Shawn Rhoden Had Two Heart Attacks.
Stan confirmed that Shawn Rhoden had died from cardiac failure after experiencing two previous heart attacks. He added that Rhoden had hidden it and that Stan was among the select few who knew.

Stan’s relocation from Los Angeles to Chicago definitely caused a heart attack in Shawn Rhoden. Although he was unaware of it at the time, the doctors who treated him in the hospital after his second heart attack theorized that the first incident may have been milder than initially thought.

“The Night Before We Were Supposed to Have Dinner, He Was on His Way and He Didn’t Feel Good.”
“His breathing became labored, and he began to feel weak. When he had a case, a second heart attack, and was taken to the hospital, he did reveal this incident when asked about previous instances. They all nodded and agreed. I felt like I was having a mini-heart attack.
Stan De Longeaux elaborated, saying that following Shawn Rhoden’s second heart attack, the medical staff was keeping a close eye on him. They told Rhoden to get a transfusion every 56 days and just “drop some blood.” When Stan last saw Rhoden, he was doing well after his recovery from a heart attack.
I can’t say for sure what his physicians told him, but he was under close observation and doing fine up until “like.” The conversation proceeded with Stan De Longeaux
Regarding Rhoden’s death and the use of performance-enhancing drugs, what is Stan’s take?
Steroids are widely used in professional bodybuilding, and it’s practically difficult for an athlete not to use them if they want to win. The widespread use of steroids and other performance enhancers is often blamed for the poor health of the bodybuilding community. Steroid use was suspected to have played a role in Shawn Rhoden’s case, which came as no surprise.
Stan De Longeaux, though, stated emphatically that Rhoden was not an excessive steroid user. In addition, he stated that the deceased bodybuilder hardly ever took them in the few years leading up to his passing. What Stan had to say was:
So that’s the most important thing, I guess. So that the obvious can finally be addressed. People seem to think that he is constantly shifting gears. The guy was off the rails. Since the start of 2019, he has received very few opportunities.
‘Shawn was…’ Worst of all, he was not persistent, regularly missing shots even when training for the Olympia. No man ever abused any kind of privilege.
I’m not denying that steroid use played a role in any negative outcomes. He got huge and heavy thanks to the steroid, and I worry about his heart, but it wasn’t quite the same as steroid misuse.
The statements that Stan De Longeaux has made about Shawn Rhoden’s moderate steroid use are true. However, the human body reacts differently to various chemicals depending on the person. Some people may be able to ignore the negative effects of steroid use despite using them heavily, whereas others may feel them even with moderate use. Therefore, anabolic drugs may have had a role in Shawn Rhoden’s untimely demise.

Shawn Rhoden’s aversion to going to the hospital stemmed from a traumatic experience he had there.
Stan went on to say that Shawn Rhoden was receiving the post-heart-attack care he needed, but that he had not experienced any warning signs that would have prevented the fatal heart attack. He thinks that might have prevented him from getting timely medical attention.
Shawn Rhoden’s unwillingness to seek medical treatment frequently may surprise some, but Stan explained that this was because of a traumatic event Rhoden experienced while a patient. When questioned, Stan De Longeaux disclosed
Since Shawn’s father never got sick, the idea of visiting a hospital filled him with dread. There was this one time when he had to go to the hospital for whatever… Upon being admitted to the hospital, he was given a death prognosis of six months. Because of this, (Shawn Rhoden) avoided the hospital at all costs. That’s ridiculous, but he was scared of that, so that’s why he did it.
However, Stan thought that Shawn Rhoden’s chances of survival would have been increased if he wasn’t frightened of hospitals. Our best hope is that it never did come to pass. Stan De Longeaux claimed that after Shawn Rhoden’s death, he took better care of himself.
