The shooting broke out about 11:45 p.m. Sunday and police negotiators were still trying to get the barricaded man to give up peacefully as a SWAT team surrounded the Westbrook apartment complex. Four children are being held hostage by a man who shot one Orlando police officer overnight.

A Florida police officer was shot Sunday night while exchanging gunfire with a man who allegedly beat his girlfriend and is now holding four children hostage inside an apartment.

The injured officer was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. SWAT officers are currently negotiating with the suspect; the rest of the apartment building has been evacuated and residents are being urged to avoid the area.

Police chief John Mina says it has been difficult for the community

Mina said the officer has "very significant injuries" but is expected to survive. The hostages are all children, ages 1, 7, 10, and 12 years old. The impact caused the car to flip onto its driver side. He asked the community for prayers for the officer and his family. At least one officer fired back at the gunman, but Mina said he wasn't sure whether the suspect was shot. SWAT is working to negotiate with the barricaded suspect now.

Judy Pepper, who lives in the apartment complex, told the Orlando Sentinel that she had fallen asleep on the couch after watching the Sunday night baseball game on television when she heard four loud gunshots. Other officers were helping him and loaded him into a police car to take him away. She said other officers arrived, cut open his shirt and appeared to be putting bandages on his neck.

"Hell, yes, I was absolutely terrified", she said.
