Though every museum has its own way of protecting the priceless works inside it, the Los Angeles Times notes that the Getty Center was constructed in such a way as to protect its contents from the very kind of emergency it's currently facing.

The most ferocious of the fires was the so-called Thomas Fire, which was sparked Monday evening and destroyed at least 150 structures by Tuesday morning.

Winds of up to 80 miles per hour are exacerbating the conditions, and a state of emergency has been declared.

Erin Mellon, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Water Resources, said that climate change is believed to have influenced the recent cycle of droughts and record rainfall.

The Skirball Fire - named after the Skirball Cultural Center in northern Los Angeles - burned 475 acres in the Sepulveda Pass near the Getty Center, The Los Angeles Times reported. More than 300 personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department are on the scene and are being supported by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, LAPD and the Angeles National Forest and CalFire, officials said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference.

The fires have periodically closed major routes in the area, including Interstate 405 and Highway 101, making it more difficult for people to get around.
