China on Wednesday said that the status of Jerusalem is sensitive and complicated, and urged all parties concerned to exercise caution for peace and tranquility in the Middle East.

The protesters, who included students, representatives of political factions, civil society figures and scouts, waved Palestine flags and banners that called for recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state. "But, you know, we view the reports that we have heard with concern because we think that Jerusalem obviously should be part of the final settlement between the Israelis and the Palestinians", he said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Wednesday for a summit of the world's primary pan-Islamic body, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in Istanbul on December 13 to discuss the expected U.S. move, according to his spokesman. The planned demonstrations come as nations around the world condemn Trump's decision.

She said Australia supports a two-state solution "where both peoples live within secure and internationally recognised borders".

US President Donald Trump's announcement has sparked global condemnation amid fears of chaos in the region. "Acknowledging this as a fact is a necessary condition for achieving peace".

French President Emmanuel Macron said he did not support Trump's "unilateral" decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and called for calm across the region. The Arab League also opposed the move, with Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit saying it was a "dangerous measure that would have repercussions". Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Al Thani told Trump that declaring Jerusalem Israel's capital will erode stability in the Middle East, Al-Jazeera television reported.

The international community regards Jerusalem's eastern sector as occupied territory and says Jerusalem's final status must be negotiated, not unilaterally declared.

Former Conservative foreign affairs minister John Baird attracted criticism in 2013 when he met a high-ranking Israeli politician in her office in East Jerusalem; that half of the city was captured by Israel in 1967.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also blasted Washington's decision to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem as a display of incompetence.

Mr Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital is a powerfully symbolic statement about a city that houses many of the world's holiest sites.

The last round of fitful peace negotiations brokered by Washington collapsed in 2014.

"Today's announcement is a recognition of reality that in no way inhibits efforts to reach a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians". The statement also issued restrictions on U.S. government employees' personal and official travel for certain areas of Israel.

Erdogan said in a speech to Turkey's Parliament on Tuesday that recognition of Jerusalem would be a "red line" for Muslims, and he warned that Turkey could respond by cutting diplomatic ties with Israel. While officials in the Trump administration have said that some of these moves could jump-start peace, Ashrawi grimaced and said they would instead "scuttle peace".

The US Congress passed legislation in 1995 to move the embassy by 1999, but a provision in the law allowed the president to sign a waiver every six months, in the interests of national security.

Known as the Western Wall, this is a sacred place of prayer for Jews.

Vice President Mike Pence said in late November that Trump was "actively considering when and how to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem".

However, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Mr Trump's shift serves extremist groups that want religious war and signals US withdrawal from being a peace mediator.

"Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Israel and the location of the US Embassy should reflect this fact", Cardin said.
