Carlos Beltran Announces Retirement After 20-Year Career, First World Series Win

It's fitting that Beltran earned his lone World Series ring in such personally anti-climactic fashion-he gave Houston -0.6 WAR in the regular season and went hitless in three World Series at-bats-because the story of his career is one that has always been somewhat at odds with itself.

Houston Astros pinch hitter Carlos Beltran hits an RBI double during the ninth inning of Game 4 of the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, in Boston.

"At some point in my career, I would love to have the opportunity to manage", Beltran told MLB.com in his first interview since announcing his retirement. He broke out in 1999 to win American League Rookie of the Year. Over 20 years, I feel like I accomplished that. In other words, the very things that defined his playing career. Meulens also known as "Bam-Bam" spent five years with the Yankees in the late eighties and early nineties. Eddie Lack played the final 40 minutes, stopping 13 of 15 shots for his first win with the Flames. Beltran crushed 22 home runs and racked up 108 RBI and 112 runs scored, while slashing.293/.337/.454. All anyone in the future will need to do is watch a few Beltran's highlights to understand that he was everything you could imagine a baseball player to be, all of them at the same time. He's also one of the all-time great postseason performers, an extensive sample highlighted by his epic 2004 playoffs for the Astros. He then batted.231 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI for Houston.

Had solid all-time counting stat numbers - 435 homers, 2,725 hits, 312 stolen bases - but did not hit any of the milestone numbers many voters and fans consider the signatures of a Hall of Fame career. There were no hitches or wasted bits of motion, but neither was there the rote and repeatable chop of a swing born in a hitting clinic.

Baseball, he wrote, was always about more than winning.

Despite never finishing in the top three in MVP award voting, Beltran piled up several individual honors, including his Rookie of the Year award. I learned a lot about what being a veteran means and the impact we can have.

And for that, I'm extremely proud and it was a privilege to have him here as a member of the Houston Astros. Managing now is different than it was, say, 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. But the Raiders are yet to reach crucial agreements for the $1.9 billion project and now could lose millions under the tax reform bill proposed by House Republicans. He's open to coming back as a coach, and even wants to manage a team someday. He was 64. Anderson called Capel one of the school's "most respected alumni and former coaches" in a statement.
