Sadio mane, 25, was issued a red card for lifting his foot too high in a challenge against City's Brazillian goalkeeper Ederson.

Liverpool appealed against the length of the ban, with both the player and boss Jurgen Klopp insisting the challenge was not intentional. Although at 1-0 down, even with 10 men, it was not an impossible task for the Reds.

It was De Bruyne's perfectly weighted pass that found Aguero's well-timed run and the Argentine opened the scoring after skipping round Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane secured a resounding win for the Citizens and inflicted upon Liverpool a first Premier League defeat of the season.

Besides, the midweek clash against Sevilla at Anfield will surely help the players and staff forget about the 5-0 and focus on what will be a very special night at Anfield.

He said: "Liverpool created a lot of opportunities in those 37 minutes - Klopp was disappointed they didn't create more considering the positions they got into". But it was a waste of time obviously.

"I hope and wish Ederson a quick recovery", he posted on his official Facebook page.

To make matters worse, their attack will be without Sadio Mane for the next few games.

John Stones has praised Ederson's character after the Brazilian returned to training just two days after suffering a nasty head injury in the win over Liverpool.

"The sending-off would have been enough", Souness said. "It was unlucky, it was an accident". In the first moment everyone thought it was really bad. "I don't think someone should get sent off when he doesn't intend to injure the player".

Mane was named Premier League player of the month for August after his stellar start to the campaign. "You've beaten Arsenal 4-0 at home and then you change your backline by taking [Dejan] Lovren out and putting [Ragnar] Klavan in".

It means that the Merseysiders have dropped to seventh in the league table, three points adrift of Guardiola's second-placed side.
