Canadian Milos Raonic suffered an early exit, the sixth seed losing 6-4, 6-4 to Adrien Mannarino, but wild card Denis Shapovalov, 18, gave the home crowd something to cheer.

Plenty of other young players over the last generation have looked just as gifted as Shapovalov, but so far they haven't won majors and displaced the sport's five top stars: Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Stan Wawrinka.

With the incredible victory in the third round against Rafael Nadal, Denis Shapovalov wants to be the sensation of the week at the Rogers Cup.

Rafa Nadal enjoyed an easy rout of Croatia's Borna Coric as he raced through the first set in just 29 minutes and did not face a break point until the 13th game.

In the second round, Shapovalov faced one of the biggest tests of his career against former US Open champions Juan Martin del Potro.

"Probably is the worst lose of the year we have, without a doubt, for me", said Nadal who hasn't won a hard court title since 2014 Doha.

At Toronto: Third round: Karolina Pliskova bt Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 retd.; Caroline Garcia bt Catherine Bellis 6-4, 6-2.

Ferrer took the first set 6-4 against world number three, who had not dropped a set since his shock defeat to Tommy Haas at the Mercedes Cup in June. "I will go and have fun but there is no way I am beating this guy", said the last year's Wimbledon junior champion. "At the same time because of the opportunity I had to get back to No. 1". But Shapovalov still did tremendously well to overcome the nerves he was likely feeling, and put in another great performance against a top player.

The Richmond Hill, Ont. native has been touted as the next big thing in Canadian tennis and it appears that he is ready to make a name for himself.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Roger Federer maintained his career-long winning streak over David Ferrer to advance to the last eight after a three-set battle with the veteran Spaniard.

"He had a good start, I had a better finish", Federer told reporters after the match. If they can play that way throughout the tournament, without Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka there, its tough to see who can stop them.

His reward is another step up in quality, as he takes on Rafael Nadal in the final match on Court Central on Thursday.

Federer began the second set with a break, but lost this advantage in the fourth game following a double fault - his fourth at this point of confrontation.

It was the first time the Frenchman had come from a set down against a top-10 opponent in seven years.

True, the Russian-born teenager (he was a one when his family moved to Canada) was lucky to escape four match points in his first-round contest against Rogerio Dutra Silva.
